November 1981 - In the heart of autumn, we left 2 cars by the Nationale 1 (!) To reach Choisy-le-Roi where we waited this studio 16 tracks which would finally allow us in 2 days of weekend of dig our furrows in the vinyl too. We were quite feverish because it was still a year and a half that Cold War existed. Our elders of Kas Product had already released 2 EP of 4 and 3 titles in 1980 while having started a few months before us. Admittedly, there was no real urgency since for some of us who came from the punk movement the atmosphere was always at No futureeven if we were not fooled for a long time ... Yet others had really left their skin, like those of the previous generation. The reasons were ironically most of the time the same: heroin and / or love, hard drugs ... Well, just, I had a terrible stomach ache, due to apprehension or some form of tension, which we forced us to stop in the Oise to allow me to run to the toilet of a troquet. The same gastric inconvenience will happen again after reaching the studio whose name I have forgotten ...
We had arrived there by the generous will of a friend, Sylvain S. said "Perlin" (what phonetic coincidence!?), Who had specially created to produce the label Stechak Products . Stechak because it was consistent vis-à-vis its previous association dubbed Chernozom and Products in tribute plural to the Nancy pioneers.
Cold War had initially counted 4 members: Fabrice Fruchart on the guitar-synth (Korg MS 20), Patrick Mallet on the bass and Gilbert Deffais says "Bébert" with the drum machine Korg. At that time, I was already singing in a rock-post punk band called Stress and that's how Cold War took the bad habit of repeating in the same Amiens cellar as Stress. In a month or two, we had half a dozen compositions. We then had the opportunity to perform a demo 4 tracks with a friend of Radio France Picardie and to participate in October at a festival at the municipal circus of Amiens. Then there was the famous November 11 concert at BJ's Club. Then we produced and edited a total of 50 copies of a cassette titled Scar. A few concerts later, while in the meantime Jean-Michel Bailleux had joined us to hold the bass, while Patrick took a guitar with which he felt more in tune and we began to have more specific projects, we have had to change places of rehearsal and rent a room. And then came the moment when Fabrice told us that he was leaving us to study in Lille ... After the concert of 19/06/1981 logically described as Adieu to 2F , Marie-José, Bébert's wife, volunteered to to be in the synth.
It was then that Perlin, who was very fond of our music and was a close friend of the couple Deffais, offered to take full charge of the production of a maxi 45 rpm 4 tracks, in this case to pay the studio, the engraving, pressing and the cover. Which beginner group would not have accepted? An improvised contract was signed with each member of Cold War . First we had to choose the 4 tracks we would have to record. Berlin 81 has established itself because it was already the emblematic song of the band. We wanted to avoid going back to other titles on Scar . The priority was then to novelty and there had been before and after the departure of Fabrice. Ersatzfor example it is due, but not Mauve and Lost Pain who were also selected and who are two compositions of Patrick.
